A welcome from Fr James

Dear friend,

It can take a little courage to walk into a church where everyone seems to know one another. If this is your first Sunday with us, I’d love to meet you. Come and say hello after Mass, especially if you’ve come on your own.

Perhaps you’ve brought a lively little one, or perhaps you’ve slipped in for a quiet prayer while someone you love is in hospital. I’m glad you’ve found your way here. May St Ann’s be a place where you feel at home.

Fr James Raj,
St Ann’s Catholic Church, Kingston Hill.

Your first Sunday

From the door to the hall

  1. When you arrive

If you can, come a few minutes before the 10.30 am Mass and give yourself time to settle. Say hello to the welcome team at the door. They can help you find a seat and show you the newsletter and hymns.

  2. During Mass

We listen to readings from the Bible, hear a short reflection, pray for others and gather around the altar for the Eucharist. Join in the words or singing you know. If it’s all new, you are welcome simply to listen. Sit, stand or kneel as you are able.

  3. Stay for a cup of tea

After Sunday Mass we usually gather in the parish hall for tea, coffee and a chat. Ask someone at the door to walk over with you. “It’s my first Sunday here” is as good a way as any to start a conversation.

Before you come

A few things you might wonder

Can I come if I’m not Catholic?

Yes. You are welcome at Mass, whether you practise another faith, are exploring Christianity or are accompanying someone you love. At Communion, if you are not receiving, you are welcome to stay in your seat for a quiet moment. Fr James is happy to talk afterwards if you have questions.

Are babies and young children welcome?

Very much so. Choose a seat where your family feels comfortable. If your little one needs to move or you need to step outside, come back in whenever you’re ready. Ask Sr Ursula about Sunday catechism and what is happening for children on the day you visit.

Do I need to book, register or dress a certain way?

Just come along to a regular weekend Mass. Wear something you feel comfortable in. Parish registration is an invitation for people who want to make St Ann’s their parish home. You are equally welcome as a visitor.

I haven’t been to church for years. Where do I start?

Come to Mass and take things at your own pace. If you would like a quiet conversation, introduce yourself to Fr James afterwards or contact him beforehand. You can also find the usual times for Confession on our Mass and Confession page.

I’d like to become Catholic. Who can I talk to?

Ask for Fr James or Sr Ursula, our catechist lead. They welcome adults who are curious about the Catholic faith, including those already baptised in another Christian tradition. Your first step can be as simple as a conversation. Ask about exploring the faith.
